Scrabble last week had two unexpected and sweet surprises. Well, three, I guess, because I won three out of four games. My worthy opponent, Sharon Gerber Scherer, is also a helluva good baker, and she brought me the remains of Dabit Azofeifa's tres leches birthday cake topped with fat strawberries and blueberries. Omg, it was fabulous. Then Cassandra Shaw walked into Qulture, walking her dogs and getting a bit of exercise. She looks amazing after her recent health issues. Taking good care of herself has her shining like her glorious jewelry creations.
Jodi Wolk and I met at La Catrina Cantina to catch up on our summer days before she heads up north to cooler climes and family. We enjoyed Angeloo's set and the best popcorn anywhere. Every time I hear Angel sing, he gets a teeny bit better. At 13, his lower notes are gaining richness, and his high notes continue their reach for the stars, with zero signs of tapering off. He is still raising funds for his Los Angeles audition for 'America's Got Talent.' Find him and support him every Wednesday at 8 pm at La Cc.
Christian Manly and Wendy Warhol had a great crowd for Jeopardy last Friday, also at La Catrina Cantina. Christian's 'Game On' is growing in popularity every other Friday at the icy cold bar. The scoring is complicated, the questions are tricky, and two hours fly by in a heartbeat. Next game up is Wheel of Fortune on July 31. Three singers in town, who have been friends for a decade-ish, got together for the first time at La Catrina Cantina and delivered a spectacular concert that lasted nearly two hours, in three-part harmony. Luis Villanueva, Diego Guerrero, and Victor do Espirito created a trio that, with a bit of work, could headline any theater in town. The song choices gave me shivers with the soaring harmonies. Lots of upbeat tunes as well, with 'Uptown Funk' loading the dance floor as their finale. Well done, gentlemen!
Football is over for another four years; however, I think this year's World Cup added more fans to the game than ever before. I was sorry that Argentina didn't win - some of my favorite people in Vallarta are from there, including Nacho Granados, Sebastian Coronel, and Chris Lopez. I wonder where we will be in 2030?
