Miana Melendez was singing in the rain at last week's Mystic Circle Cafe's Summer Music Series. A small group of friends and family, including Miana's lovely mother, listened to some of her favorite songs; Miana excels at jazz. Tomorrow night, Kim Archer, singer, songwriter, guitarist, and storyteller, takes the stage. Doors open at 6, and the show starts at 6:30 sharp.
I had another glorious session last week at Stan Wagner's Neurofeedback locale on Lazaro Cardenas, and I am going again today! It's very hard to explain what happens during these 33- or 45-minute encounters with interrupted sounds, mostly musical. You can sit and listen, balance your checkbook, scroll on your phone; it doesn't matter, your brain can work all on its own. I was so surprised that during my first session, months ago, my feet demanded immediate attention, and I spent that half an hour flexing my toes and feeling almost all of the motions. After two sessions, my neuropathy was 65% gone and has stayed gone. I don't know why; I did not go into neurofeedback with any expectations, but every time I go, I come out better than when I went in—amazing, non-invasive, inexpensive, and gratifying treatments.
Luis Villanueva hosted Todd and Spencer last Wednesday at La Catrina Cantina. It was a hoedown! At one point, Spencer leaped off the stage, introduced me to the Texas Two-Step, then jumped back onstage to continue singing. My tablemates, Gillian Parrillo and Pierre Cutler, had a good laugh. We stayed to support 13-year-old wunderkind Angeloo, whose show starts at 8 pm.
Our Scrabble Tournament went to the wire; I had three Bingos in our third game and maintained the crown. Maybe next time, Sharon Gerber Scherer! We are back with regular play all September, Wednesdays at 12:30 at Qulture. Join us!
Bill Williams, co-owner with Juan Alvarado, of La Catrina Cantina, celebrated his 70th birthday with a packed house of friends and a stage featuring first Tonny Kenneth, then Nacho Granados. The first La Catrina Cantina VIP, Sharon Gerber Scherer, held a table front and center that included me, Gabe Arciniega, and Derek Carkner. La CC served a beautiful buffet of food and birthday cake, but no stripper. (Dammit.)
The First Saturday for Arte Vallarta Museo again took place in the Speakeasy and theater at Arte Vallarta, high on the hill on Pilitas, just off Olas Altas. Jerry Jones, a dear friend and publisher of Out & About Puerto Vallarta magazine, brought his new editor, Adán Villa, to Arte Vallarta for a look-see. Covering for Director Nathalie Herling and her husband Javier Niño, currently in Europe, the irrepressible Christian Yussel, scooped the duo and gave them both a grand tour of Arte Vallarta - its airy galleries, way cool Speakeasy, artist supply store, and the theatre where we watched a short film on painter José Luis Arias. The artist was on hand to answer questions; he is lovely and passionate about his work.
Volunteer at large, Dale Bouayadi, descended upon Hyden Custom Furniture last week with an eye for wood scraps. She was warmly received and was left to go through two bins full of scrap hardwood. She was looking for skinny pieces to make stretchers for a painter she visits at the Dif Old Age Home in Coapinole. Tirso David Garcia Plata of Colectivo Hueco made stretchers out of the wood she sourced for her painter friend Jesus, and she delivered them this week. So, to the owners of Hyden, Sacha Cantor and Aaron Salas, thank you from all of us for sharing your scraps with the world - your finished products are beautiful; your castoffs are the same...eventually! Go to Hyden during regular business hours and bag or box up free hardwood pìeces for an art project, pizza oven, firepit, whatever, and don't be shy!!!
