From Here, June 15, Monday
We are midway through June, which only leaves two weeks to register your cell phone number. I was at TelCel's main office 10 minutes before they opened at 9 am, last Tuesday, passport and Permanent Residency card in hand; you must have both. It took three tries, but the fourth time was golden, and I was back on the street by 9:15.
Wednesday Scrabble had Sharon and me duking it out in an almost instant replay of the tournament game last week. I won the first game, she the second, then we Tied at 310 apiece. Tie games are rare as hen's teeth in Scrabble.
I walked down to Nacho Daddy for the second-to-last bingo game for Colina Spay and Neuter Clinic. We were a small but mighty crowd, and I won two games. The last one is June 24. We will resume in September.
Nick Rogers debuted his new show at La Catrina Cantina last Friday. 'Curtain Calls and Cocktails' gave us a glimpse into Nick's life onstage and backstage in his formative years as a singer, and into some of his fortunate run-ins with famous folk, including Lin-Manuel Miranda. He sang his favorite Broadway showtunes, some of which were audition songs for various productions. It is delightful to listen to Nick's voice. The breathwork, resonance, everything is delivered just so. Catch his next iteration, Friday, June 26, at 5 pm.
More than 40 of us gathered on the beach at Langostinos for drinks and chit-chat as part of Gen Ex-pats Facebook group's ongoing task to help our restaurants and bars get through the quiet(er) summer season. The same lamentable thing happens in Canada every winter - the weather is simply reversed - It's too cold to go out; it's snowing; my car won't start because I forgot to plug it in.'' We are all guilty of nesting and being lazy, but this summer will be especially hard with the abrupt end of our busy season in February. So, take a walk, stop in at a restaurant or bar you've never been to, have a drink, and peruse the menu. Every contribution counts. I was surprised by the number of people I did not know at our latest gathering. Thanks to group founder Brent Lane and Langostinos for the warm hospitality and for creating an umbrella forest overhead that kept some of the rain out!
The new show, "The Lineup," takes place every Wednesday at Act2PV, at 7 pm. Produced by Cate Elizabeth and David Maiocco, the show changes every week. I have heard glowing reviews. Check in here next Monday for a full report.
Attention, all of you artists out there who work with hardwood! Go to Sacha Cantor's amazing furniture factory tomorrow from noon to 4 pm and pick up scraps. Sacha's Hyden Custom Furniture in Colonia Lazaro Cardenas is overflowing with gorgeous pieces of wood, suitable for pizza ovens, firepits, making stretchers, or any interesting projects that require wood. None of the wood has been painted, varnished, or stained, so it is perfectly suited for cooking food. And it's all free. Help recycle, make something beautiful, save money, and keep the wood out of the landfill.
My wonderful herbalist, Ricardo Mazcal, is offering 20% off his cancer tonic this week. Find him at his Isla Cuale Market every Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm.
Have a wonderful week, everyone, and if you have to pick just one thing to do over the next seven days, pick being kind to one another, From Here.
