Opening Reception: Maritza Vázquez Blu

Drawing inspiration from the human instinct to explore, Maritza’s work reimagines the mysterious beauty of the ocean floor, where marine creatures transform lost objects into newfound wonders. With a career that includes three museum exhibitions across Mexico, her artistry celebrates the vibrant interplay between nature and the remnants of human history.

If there is a well-established instinct mankind has, it is to explore. Adventurers in sailboats, barges, canoes, ships; anything that would take them to faraway lands; avid travelers that risked everything in their quest for discovery.  Whatever item that didn’t make it to safe port was engulfed by the ocean. When we dive, we never know for sure what we will encounter. Marine creatures appropriate some of those objects giving them a new meaning and use. They themselves are so many, so interesting and some very difficult to find, that a whole life of exploration will not be enough to see them all. Here I present, in a joyful way, my own interpretation of a few rediscovered specimens and found objects in the depths of the ocean. – Maritza Vázquez Blu
